The scope of Mobile Bio-metric Technology

Updated: Jun 20, 2019

Over the past few years, there has been an exponential growth in the demand of bio-metric technology, particularly in the government, financial and corporate sectors. As per a report by Markets and Markets, the worldwide market of bio-metric systems was valued at USD 13.89 Billion in the year 2017. It is expected to reach USD 41.80 Billion by the year 2023, with a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19.99%. Needless to say, this presents a huge scope for the growth of mobile bio-metric technology, in the consumer market. Bio-metric Research Group. Inc., published a report in the year 2015, in which it projected that the inclusion of bio-metric in mobile devices will generate worldwide revenue of about USD 45 Billion by the year 2020.

The rise in demand of mobile bio-metric technology is due to the fact that the bio-metric devices cannot always be used for human identification and authentication in a controlled office environment. Mobile bio-metric technology brings mobility and simplicity to the user, eliminating the need of a confined physical infrastructure to function. It also speeds up the authentication process, reducing the operation load and increasing the operational speed.

Bio-metric functionalities can be included in the mobile devices either by using inbuilt bio-metric sensors, or by integrating external bio-metric devices.

Mobile bio-metric authentication can be used as multi-modal application, where, depending on the industry requirements and particulars, the modalities can vary.

Single mode: A single mode of authentication is provided. For example, fingerprint authentication or voice recognition.

Interchangeable: Here the user is provided with various authentication options to choose from. For example, the user may choose fingerprint authentication, voice recognition or face recognition as preferred mode of authentication.

Dual mode authentication: In this case, the user is required to use simultaneously two modes for authentication. For example, the user should use a combination of fingerprint and face recognition, for authentication.

Multi-mode authentication: Here, the user can be asked to provide three or more types of bio-metric credentials for authentication. For example, multi-modal authentication can work as a combination of fingerprint, face and voice recognition.

Multi-modal feature provides various flexible ways in which mobile bio-metric authentication can serve different industries. Be it mobile banking, e-commerce, fintech corporations, government organizations or multinational enterprises, mobile bio-metric technology can be incorporated in the day to day authentication processes. In addition, high reliability, data security and reduced chances of error, makes it a suitable security authentication alternative to other traditional methods.

More research is being conducted in an effort to incorporate mobile bio-metric technology into lives of regular consumers. It is only a matter of time that the mobile bio-metric technology captures most of the global market.
